How to Order at Restaurants in China (No Chinese Needed!)
Hey guys! It's me back with Part 4: Conquering Chinese Restaurants
Walking into a busy local restaurant with no English menu can be intimidating — but don't worry! Here's your survival guide to ordering like a pro ✨
Know Before You Go
• Scan & Order Culture: Most restaurants use QR code menus on tables — no need to wait for staff!
• Sharing Style: Dishes are designed to be shared family-style
• Tea is Free: That pot of tea on your table? Usually complimentary!
Your 3-Step Ordering System
Step 1: Access the Menu
• Look for QR code stickers on tables or walls
• Scan with WeChat/Alipay → menu appears instantly
• No QR code? Politely say: "菜单, 谢谢" (càidān, xièxie = menu, please)
Step 2: Translate & Choose
• Use Google Translate/WeChat Translate camera function
• Point at dishes you want or show server translated phrases:
-
"这个" (zhège) = This one
-
"不辣" (bù là) = Not spicy
-
"不要香菜" (bú yào xiāngcài) = No cilantro
Step 3: Order & Pay
• For QR menus: Add to cart → checkout directly in the app
• Traditional ordering: Point at menu + use simple numbers
• Payment: Usually scan table's payment QR code when finished
Pro Tips for Stress-Free Dining
• Popular dishes first: Start with classics like Kung Pao Chicken or Dumplings
• Portion guidance: 1 dish per person + 1 extra to share is perfect
• Special requests: Show this translation: "我对花生过敏" (I'm allergic to peanuts)
• Get the bill: Say "买单" (mǎidān) or make writing gesture
When Things Get Tricky
• No pictures? Check nearby tables and point at what looks good!
• Still confused? Use food photos from Google/Dianping as visual guide
• Can't finish? Say "打包" (dǎbāo) for takeaway box!
You've Got This!
Remember: Most servers are patient with foreigners. Smile, point, use translation apps — and you'll enjoy amazing meals stress-free!
