China First-Timer Packing List: Tech & Travel Hacks You Need

About to board for China? This is your essential digital + physical checklist to survive and thrive. Save this list before you go!

1.DIGITAL TOOLKIT (Pre-Departure Download)
- VPN App (Astrill/ExpressVPN)
Why: Google, Instagram, WhatsApp don’t work here. Set it up before you arrive to avoid being locked out.

-Alipay + WeChat (with linked foreign card)
Why: Cash is almost dead. Link your Visa/Mastercard in advance—street vendors, metros, bikes all scan to pay.

-Translation Apps (Google Translate + WeChat Scan)
Why: Menus, signs, conversations. Use offline Chinese packs and WeChat’s real-time camera scan.

-Maps: AMap or Baidu Maps (not Google Maps)
Why: Google Maps is unreliable here. These show real-time transit, bike shares, and taxi wait times.

-DIDI (China’s Uber)
Why: Hail cabs without speaking. Link to Alipay for auto-pay. Register with your overseas number before landing.

2.PHYSICAL MUST-PACKS
-Portable Power Bank (20,000mAh+) with charging cable
Why: You’ll use your phone for everything. Outlets aren’t always handy, and renting power banks requires Chinese ID.

-Universal Travel Adapter (Type A/C/I compatible)
Why: China uses 220V with Type A, C, or I sockets. Some hotels lack universal ports.

-Prescription Medications (in original packaging)
Why: Many international medicines require a local prescription. Bring enough + a doctor’s note to avoid customs issues.

-Tissues + Hand Sanitizer (mini packs)
Why: Public restrooms often lack toilet paper and soap. Always carry your own.

3.SMART EXTRAS

-Printed Hotel Address & Key Attractions in Chinese
Why: Show taxi drivers or ask for directions when your phone dies.

-Small Amount of RMB Cash (¥500-1000)
Why: For emergencies, small markets, or places with poor signal. Get crisp bills—torn notes may be rejected.

-SIM Card/ eSIM (China Mobile/Unicom) or International Roaming Plan
Why: Many app registrations need a local number. Buy an eSIM online before arrival or get a SIM at the airport.

-Noise-Cancelling Earbuds
Why: Long flights, busy metros, bustling streets—your sanity saver.
